Apache is fitted below-fuselage M230 30 mm Chain Gun. The weapon is slewed as well as elevated and depressed hydraulically. The gun is fired electrically. In theory, the maximum rate of fire is between 600 and 650 rounds per minute. In reality, the maximum rate of fire is approximately 300 rounds per minute and thereafter requires a ten-minute cooling-off period.

The aircraft can carry up to 1,200 rounds of 30mm ammunition. The weapon fires two types of rounds: the M789 High-Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP) and the M799 High-Explosive Incendiary (HEI). Both rounds are very effective against exposed personnel and unarmored vehicles.
